Digitizing for the automotive industry, inside out

Speed up your digitising process with iDigit

Template digitizing is a necessity across the automotive industry, from the standard accessories of vehicles produced in their factory to customizable items that can be added as an upgrade later on.

Thanks to the requirements and feedbacks we’ve gathered from our clients in the automotive industry over the years, we’ve succeeded in making iDigit answer to the industry’s digitization needs and go the extra mile.

Today iDigit is being utilized across the world by our clients in the automotive industry, varying from SME’s to multi billion-dollar multinational corporations producing a multitude of components such as car mats, seats, interiors, carbon-fibre parts car covers and film wrapping.

Why iDigit ?

To meet the requirements and challenges brought by the various types of materials used as templates, we tap into iDigit’s high adaptation capabilities as detailed in the following examples

Digitising Car Mats

If you’re in the car mat production business, you’re most likely to be using actual mats or card patterns for templating. Depending on your specialty, you might be also digitizing large format pieces, such as for vans and similar large vehicles. Also, depending on your business model, you might be in need to digitize on the go, such as at customer sites.

Thanks to iDigit’s customizable nature in terms of board size, color and setup style and our experience in the field we’re able to showcase and offer you the optimal digitizing solution, further customized around your individual requirements and preferences.

If you’re using actual mats as templates, iDigit’s white board option can be utilized with either iDigit Lite or iDigit XL based on your size specs. Using the horizontal setup with the board laid flat on a table, floor or your CNC machine makes it easy to use the mats as templates without using any magnets.

Endless Possibilities

If you’re short of space and would like to use the board only when in need of digitization then our modular board that’s made of multiple smaller, easy to handle panels can be placed and stowed away easily as needed.

iDigit XL Large Format Photo Digitizer

Should you be using paper or card templates only, then our standard black, wall-mounted board is the way to go, again with custom sizes.

Another requirement we often get from our clients is, in addition to their principal iDigit station they sometimes need to do digitizing on the go by visiting clients on-site. In this case we can offer you an additional smaller size board that can be carried in a car boot in two pieces, which can be placed together on the floor once on-site and pictures can be taken by holding the camera by hand.

As car mats are mainly comprised of rounded turns instead of corners, iDigit’s automatic smoothing function combined with its ability to export DXF and SVG with ARC entities ensures your templates are ready to cut without manual smoothing or re-fitting.

Once you digitize a set of mats for a certain make/model and year of a vehicle, you can add it into iDigit’s digital library, thus eliminating the need for storing the physical templates and re-digitizing them again. You can simply browse your archive and load it onto iDigit.

Digitising Car Seats & Interiors

Combining our expertise in the upholstery industry with automotive, we’ve equipped iDigit with a rich toolset that are specialized for digitizing templates for car seats and interiors, such as doors, dashboards and consoles.

Your templates can be made of any material, including fabric, leather, paper or card which also means they can be of any color.

Depending on the material, size and availability of space you could choose from a variety of iDigit models with further customization around your needs.

Upon opening the photo in iDigit, you will get pattern outlines, notches, drill holes and cut-outs instantly and precisely.

Any additional features such as seam allowance, annotations, symmetrical pairs can be added in seconds, before exporting your design in your format of choice including DXF, SVG, HPGL or PDF. If you’re using Illustrator as part of your CAD toolset, you can directly copy patterns from iDigit and paste them in AI.

Digitising Car Covers

First and foremost, car covers mean extra large parts which require a digitizing system that can digitize them fast and accurately. While passenger cars are around 4-5 meters in length, other vehicles such as camping vehicles and motorhomes can be significantly larger which makes iDigit XL an excellent fit for this challenge.

Using our customizable boards which can be as large as 450 cm in length we can solve the large format digitizing problem without compromising on accuracy.

The speed advantage of using iDigit for digitizing grows proportionally to the pattern size. The larger your patterns are, the longer it would take to digitize them with legacy methods.

Once digitized, you can bring all your parts in one iDigit workspace and perform any checks or modifications as needed.

Patterns that are larger than the board can be folded or cut, and digitized using iDigit’s Partial Digitizing function.

If you’re using fabric for draping, iDigit’s “Fabric / Fringed Material” option will be a handy smoothing tool that will digitize your templates with automatic smoothing applied.

Car Wrapping (High-visibility, protective, decorative, chapter 8)

This is the field of the automotive industry which requires extreme precision and smoothness.

Our clients in the wrapping business use iDigit to digitize their templates which are mainly made of transparent film on which the templates are traced using black markers, although sometimes other types of templates are used, such as old wraps removed from the vehicle.

The nature of the template materials allow iDigit to be setup in flexible ways, whether horizontal or vertically. The size can vary depending on the specialty of the user, for instance our clients specializing on motorbikes and scaled models use a smaller iDigit board, whereas those specializing on high-visibility wrapping for ambulances, police vehicles and other types of emergency services vehicles utilize a much larger iDigit board.

In cases where the shapes are traced using dashed lines, iDigit offers the easy-to-use drawing function, which allows fitting lines and radii (Arc) on shapes precisely.

You can apply a myriad of editing functions, such as rounding corners with a given radius, changing template sizes entirely or only on a specific edge and much more.

Your patterns can be exported in DXF or SVG or even be copy-pasted directly into Illustrator without saving any files.

Your work is always safe, as iDigit’s model archive allows you to store your digitized models in your cloud storage for safety and convenience.
